What is Ear Canal?

Ear Canal is the narrow passage that carries sound from the outer ear to the eardrum. It begins at the ear opening and ends at the tympanic membrane. Skin, fine hairs and earwax help protect the canal, while its shape and size affect hearing, ear examinations and the fit of some hearing aids.

Understanding Ear Canal

The canal has a skin lining, small hairs and glands that produce earwax. These features help trap dust and support protection against minor irritation and infection. The outer part contains cartilage, while the deeper part lies within bone. The canal is not straight, so inserting cotton buds or other objects can push wax deeper or injure the skin.

A plug of wax, canal swelling or an infection can produce temporary conductive hearing loss, muffled sound, itching or pain. These symptoms can resemble other hearing conditions. So, the canal should be checked before interpreting hearing test results or adjusting amplification.

The canal also affects comfort and acoustic performance when a person wears.hearing aid. A poor physical fit may create pressure, feedback or an occluded sensation.
